John of Rila

   Patron saint of Bulgaria (q.v.). He spent much of his life (ca. 880-946) as a hermit (q.v.), but toward the end of his life he founded the famous Rila monastery, a koinobion (q.v) in the Rila Mountains in southwest Bulgaria.
